Friday is series (and movies too). On the eve of the weekend, the Parisian offers you a selection of fictions, films, documentaries not to be missed on online video platforms. On the program especially this week: the return of a romantic couple who travels back in time, and that of Jim Carrey as a father broken by the death of his son.

NETFLIX

The romantic series: “Outlander” season 5

Return to North Carolina, to America in the second half of the 18th century, with one of the most romantic couples on the small screen. The epic love story between Claire and Jamie Fraser had started in Scotland when the beautiful Englishwoman had traveled back in time since the 20th century thanks to a magic circle of stones. After crossing the Atlantic, they are now settled in one of the English colonies in the New World, and have been joined by Brianna, their daughter, as well as Roger, his companion.

This fifth season opens with the marriage of these two. A time of joy and calm before the storm since Jamie, linked by his allegiance to the British crown, will have to lead an expedition in pursuit of rebels who are his own friends. We love this adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's literary fresco, each season of which corresponds to a tome from the saga.

While the 9th novel is eagerly awaited by fans, this season 5 incorporates all the ingredients for the success of the previous ones: magnificent sets and costumes, passionate relationships, sexy love scene and tragic twists and turns.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"Outlander" , an American series by Ronald D. Moore with Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan ... Season 5 (2020), episode 1/12 (a new episode added every Monday). (62 minutes)

The animation masterpiece: "Porco Rosso"

During the interwar period, an army pilot (with the voice of Jean Reno) who was transformed into a pig-headed man plays the mercenaries. Based, with his red seaplane, on a small Adriatic island, he carries out interventions to help neighboring inhabitants in danger and recover premiums and cargoes of gold. While being chased by Italian fascist forces ...

Located between "Kiki the little Witch" and "Princess Mononoke", "Porco Rosso" is one of the most beautiful films of Hayao Miyazaki, the master of Japanese animation. He put in the film many of his fads: his love of Europe - "Porco Rosso" takes place in Italy and the hero listens in loop "the Time of Cherries" -, his passion for aviation, his disgust for dictatorships… All mixed with fantastic touches and transcended by the sumptuous graphics that made the filmmaker famous. In the end, a fascinating spectacle for both children and adults…

The series with Al Pacino: "Hunters"

In New York in the late 1970s, a secret team of vigilantes was formed, the sole purpose of which was to hunt down German Nazis who had taken refuge in the United States, who only dreamed of founding a Fourth Reich on American territory.

The reconstruction of the Big Apple seventies is stunning, music, sets and costumes literally take us back in time. The budget for the series, which has not been communicated, seems substantial. It notably made it possible to produce a pilot episode which constitutes a real ambitious 1.5 hour film. At the head of the cast shines Al Pacino, rare on the small screen, who embodies here Meyer Offerman, millionaire at the head of the anti-Nazi commando.

Despite all these advantages, "Hunters" does not convince and worse, sometimes even causes discomfort. The fault with a scenario which constantly makes the big gap between terrible and freezing flashbacks in the concentration camps, and modern scenes with quirky humor. Two totally different universes, which "Hunters" tries in vain to want to reconcile.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 2.5 / 5

"Hunters" , an American series by David Weil, with Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Josh Radnor, Kate Mulvany ... 10 episodes, the first of an hour and a half, then an hour.

The salty humor show: "Fifty / Fifty"

"For you public", Franck Dubosc re-enacts, in his last show, the odious seducer - almost a trademark - and tells of his fifties, the children, his role as conscientious father who wanted to try everything before deciding … Even the babysitter. He teases his wife too, with a falsely innocent frankness. Unbearable and hilarious, so well in the skin of his character imbued with himself, he unrolls, recounts his vacation in poor countries to take photos of children in the streets. Black humor suits him well. Word games and schoolboy situations too. The room is folded. For those who like it, it is salty this "Fifty / Fifty". But it goes well ...

MYCANAL

The melancholy series: "Kidding" season 2

We had loved in the fall of 2018 the first season of "Kidding", a bittersweet comedy full of melancholy. The hero embodied by a Jim Carrey at the top of his game is Jeff Pickles, host of a children's television program that has been a hit for thirty years. But outside the camera, the man is shattered by the death of one of his sons, a drama from which he cannot recover. Right in the middle of the lead at the end of season 1, he had knocked down at the wheel of his car the new companion of his ex-wife.

Season 2 starts right after, when Jeff finds it difficult to take responsibility for his gesture. Like a child trapped in an adult body, his unpredictable reactions provoke in the viewer laughs that are sometimes frank, sometimes yellow. The fantastic sequences in which the hero revisits his childhood are particularly inventive and successful.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"Kidding" , an American series by Dave Holstein with Jim Carrey, Catherine Keener ... Season 2 (2020), episodes 1 to 4/10 (two episodes added every Monday). 4 x 28 minutes.

The film that gives wings: "Dumbo"

During the interwar period, Holt Farrier, a widowed horse trainer, returned from the front to join the circus which employed him, where his two children await him. The little family soon took charge of Dumbo, a baby elephant with oversized ears and who was the laughingstock of spectators. But when the Farriers discover that its ears are used to fly, the whole troop becomes the object of lust of a successful entrepreneur…

Tim Burton has won his bet: revisiting the cult cartoon of 1941 in real images. At the same time enchanting, removed, funny and scary, his "Dumbo" is a fantasy for the general public tinged with themes that the director of "Edward aux hands of money ”likes… With a breathtaking gallery of exceptional circus artists and a cute baby elephant whose charm owes a lot to his physical anomalies. Above all, Burton knew how to breathe a good deal of wonder into his entire film: thrills guaranteed with each flight of Dumbo!

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

“Dumbo” , by Tim Burton (2019), with Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green… From 8 years old. (1:32)

SCO

The series where all shots are allowed: "Vice Principals"

Specialist in comedy, Danny McBride gave birth to the series "Kenny Powers" and recently "The Righteous Gemstones" (both available on OCS). Meanwhile, he also created "Vice Principals". In this fiction, he plays Neal Gamby, deputy headmaster of a high school which he dreams of taking over. Especially since the head of the establishment is about to retire. Everything collapses when he appoints a woman to his estate.

Neil will then join his worst enemy: the other deputy headmaster, Lee Russell, to bring down this intruder. The two men have no limits in their machinations, multiplying the low blows, sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening, in order to ruin the reputation of their new superior.

We love the duo formed by Danny McBride and Walton Goggins ("The Shield", "Justified", "Sons of Anarchy"), the latter proving to be really excellent in the comic register.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

"Vice Principals" , American series by Danny McBride and Jody Hill (2016-2017) with Danny McBride, Walton Goggins ... Two seasons (18 episodes of 28 minutes).

The luminous drama: "Farewell to the night"

Muriel (Catherine Deneuve), who runs an equestrian center, is delighted with the visit of her grandson Alex, whom she sees only on very rare occasions. Since the young man's mother lost his life in a scuba diving accident and his father has rebuilt his life in Guadeloupe, Alex has become impoverished.

If he returns to the maternal lands, it is also to find Lila who works in a retirement home where she gives all satisfaction. The couple have a project: to gain Syria under the aegis of a recruiter to carry out the jihad there… Major figure of French cinema, André Téchiné signs here an eighth collaboration with Catherine Deneuve.

It seems that two instruments match with the highest intensity, the most obvious naturalness. The final revelation of the film, which opens with the magnificent images of an eclipse of the sun, is that of Oulaya Amamra, César for best female hope for "Divines" in 2017.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

“L'Adieu à la nuit” (2019), a French psychological drama by André Téchiné, with Catherine Deneuve, Oulaya Amamra, Kacey Mottet-Klein… (1h43)
