A huge selection of makeup makes the decision difficult? Stiftung Warentest examined 13 products for harmful substances and advertising promises - the test winner is also cheap.

  • Most of the makeup products tested performed well in the test.
  • However, some contain questionable ingredients * such as environmentally harmful silicone.
  • At Stiftung Warentest, a natural cosmetic make-up was particularly convincing.

Make-up retouches redness, blemishes and makes the complexion shine. For many it is part of the daily morning routine - like brushing your teeth and taking a morning shower. The user is spoiled for choice between tons of make-up products, from cheap to expensive, from natural products to conventional goods. But there are big qualitative differences : Stiftung Warentest tested 13 make-ups with regard to a uniform make-up result, pollutants and keeping the advertising promise.

Three makeup products contain questionable ingredients - one fragrance is said to render sterile

As part of the Stiftung Warentests, 22 test subjects assessed the skin feel and durability of the products, including make-ups from the Maybelline, Alterra, L'Oréal and Clinique brands . For three days, the study participants applied the products without knowing which brand they were using. In addition to the women's experience report, laboratory results were also included in the evaluation of Stiftung Warentest: the make-ups were also checked for questionable ingredients *.

"The levels of germs and heavy metals were not a problem in any of the products tested," says the Stiftung Warentest publication. However, the silicone cyclopentasiloxane, also D5, was detected in three products (Liquid Camouflage Full Cover Foundation from Artdeco, Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation from Maybelline and 3 in 1 Easy Match Make-up from Manhattan). This is difficult to degrade and can accumulate in aquatic organisms such as fish, which is why it is considered an environmental risk factor. Silicon will be banned from 2020 .

In the 3 in 1 Easy Match make-up from Manhattan, the Stiftung Warentest was also able to demonstrate Lilial, a fragrance that is suspected of impairing fertility . The substance is listed as Butylphenyl Methylpropional on the list of ingredients.
