Where there is a battle there is a woman. The New York Historical Society celebrates two hundred years of women's activism in the United States with 'Women March', the exhibition open until August 30, 2020. The exhibition also celebrates the one hundred years of the 19th amendment that guaranteed women's voting rights at federal level on August 18, 1920.
Through a photo gallery of the most significant moments of the last 200 years, the exhibition aims to inform about the importance of women in battles such as the Equal Rights Amendament (ERA) the amendment to the United States Constitution which proposed to guarantee equal rights for citizens, without distinction of sex, or the movements for the abolition of slavery or the different strikes for workers' rights. Whenever fundamental rights were denied or questioned, women were ready to march even before they were granted the right to vote.
"Since the United States has existed - reads a statement from the New York Historical Society - women have organized themselves to shape the country's politics and ensure their rights as citizens". In addition to the photos, the exhibition, curated by Valerie Paley director of the Center for Women's History, also includes videos of women's collectives over the centuries up to the 21st century, the current era.
'Women March' takes on a meaning that goes beyond the specifically historical aspect. A few days later followed the sentence that definitively condemned the former film producer Harvey Weinstein for rape and gave even more value to the #metoo movement against the abuses of male power against women. But it also comes in the year of presidential elections and in which some conservative governments in some states are undermining some fundamental women's rights, such as abortion or contraception.
"2020 is a fundamental moment both for the past and for the future of American politics - explained Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New York Historical Society - and the same is the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment that guaranteed the right to vote to women and which coincides both with a presidential election and with the census in the United States ".
