"From the first days of Giulio Regeni's disappearance I couldn't help noticing that there was a contrast between the excellent relations with Egypt and the elusiveness of the Egyptian authorities on the case despite my pressure".
This was stated in a hearing before the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the death of the researcher, the former ambassador to Cairo Maurizio Massari.
Furthermore, the Egyptian authorities did not immediately inform the diplomat of the discovery of Regeni's body on the morning of February 3. Massari revealed that it was "his non-institutional source" from the American University of Cairo that informed him.
