In Rouen, the triumph of the Puccini effect

David Bobbée's staging on Tosca works effectively but the management disappoints.


The two greatest joys felt at the new production of Tosca mounted by the Rouen Opera are the strong presence of young people in the audience, and their enthusiasm. It is at the age when we still ignore prejudices, that we can convince ourselves that opera, not only is not made for old people, but has an intensity comparable to series which make prosperity video on demand sites. With this thriller king, Puccini, the murder of Scarpia works every time. You had to hear the most youthful fringe of the public no longer able to refrain from applauding at the end of Act II, but having to restrain themselves several times when noting that Puccini had added an orchestral epilogue which is also part of the representation: nothing serious, they will learn opera codes soon enough!
