Mourning in the world of cycling. Danilo Barozzi, professional runner from Reggio from 1949 to 1958, died at the age of 92, competing in the era of Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali and the champion masseur, the countryman Giannetto Cimurri. The former runner died yesterday morning at the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Reggio Emilia where he was hospitalized following the coronavirus infection after he had been operated on the femur twenty days ago. The local press reports.
In his resume Barozzi boasted the participation in nine editions of the Giro d'Italia as well as numerous trophies, winning 12 races. He wore the shirts of several historic teams including Atala, Lygie and Cimatti, in addition to the blue one of the Italian national team. At the end of his career he took over a hardware store in his Bagnolo in Piano, in Reggio Emilia, where he lived and where he organized a race in which he managed to bring his friend Bartali with whom he made the lap of honor by bringing a bouquet of flowers.
