Age, sex, medical problems… what do we know about coronavirus deaths in France and abroad?

Deaths often over the age of 70 and suffering from previous pathologies: data from France, Spain and Italy

Their age, gender, pathologies they suffered from, as well as their region of origin ... As the list of victims of Covid-19 grows, health authorities record data on these infected patients. A primary collection to identify the most vulnerable profiles and allow them to best protect these populations, facing a virus that has caused more than 1,700 deaths in France.

It is the public health organization France which is responsible for collecting and collecting this data on our territory. His last epidemiological point, published Thursday, is full of lessons, and this, even if it only takes into account the deaths recorded in the hospital until March 24, notably concealing the disappearance of Julie, the first minor to succumb to a severe form of the virus.

Men 81 years old on average

As we indicated on Tuesday, men are in the majority, among the French who have so far been carried away by the coronavirus. Of the 507 cases studied, they represent 57% of deaths. Note that these data could vary slightly in the future, if the government decides to include in these data the many deaths observed in the Ehpad, since, as INSEE emphasizes, the population of these residences for the elderly is 75 % female.

The victims identified Thursday by Public Health France presented, for 57% of them, comorbidities, that is to say disorders or pathologies such as cancer, diabetes or hypertension. The average age at death is 81.2 years.

If all age groups can be affected by severe symptoms linked to the virus, only 1% of deaths concerned people aged 18 to 44, and all of them presented with previous pathologies. 6.3% of the victims were between 45 and 64 years of age (more than half of whom suffered from other disorders) and almost 15% between 65 and 74 years of age (including 68% of co-morbidities). Finally, the vast majority of victims - 78.3% - were over 75 years old and, for half, had other pathologies.

Of the 1,100 patients who died between the beginning of the month and March 24, we also learn that 37% came from the Grand-Est region, a quarter of Ile-de-France and 10% from Hauts-de-France. This corresponds, more or less, to the mapping of hospitalizations linked to Covid-19.

Even fewer women in Italy

The organization also reveals that, among the reported cases of resuscitation admissions, the average age was 65 years and a quarter was over 75 years. More than one in two cases "presents at least one potential risk factor for complications with Covid-19", underlines Santé publique France. Mainly diabetes and heart pathologies. But, more worryingly - and Julie's disappearance is proof of this - these data also show that 17% of the cases were under the age of 65 and free of comorbidities.

This typical profile of deaths in France differs somewhat from that of Italian victims. The data collected by our neighbors, who count 9000 deaths this Friday, underline that among the deaths of the coronavirus, the men are much more numerous: 70% of the victims. They are, as in France, mostly aged, 78 years on average. Nearly 85% of them were over 70 years of age and no deaths among those under 30 were counted.

We also learn that only 1.4% of the deaths studied concerned patients without comorbidities and that more than half of these victims had at least three distinct disorders (hypertension, diabetes, kidney and cardiac problems in mind) before their death. Our neighbors also looked at the time from first symptoms to death, which averages nine days and could, for the most dramatic cases, be as little as four days.

Elderly Spanish and Chinese victims

Some information is also available concerning deaths in Spain, a country just as badly affected by the coronavirus as Italy, with nearly 5000 deaths this Friday. As of March 26, out of 1,367 victims, 62.2% were men. Almost nine in 10 were over the age of 70 and only 1% under the age of 30.

It seems interesting to take a tour of China, the birthplace of the Covid-19, which has since the discovery of the virus at the end of December 3,292 deaths. In mid-February, according to data published in the scientific journal Jama, analyzes already showed that the mortality rate increased markedly with age and the presence of comorbidities. The victims were also more often men than women (63.8% of deaths).
