Messi explained that he and his colleagues agreed to reduce up to 70% of their salary so that Barcelona club employees receive 100%.

Lionel Messi and Gerard Piqué announced this Monday that they and most of their colleagues will make a significant adjustment in their salaries to help the coronavirus crisis.

Through a statement released on Instagram, the husband of Antonela Roccuzzo explained that the players will reduce their salaries by 70% so that the workers of the institution receive 100% of their salary and can support their families during quarantine.

"First of all, we want to clarify that our will has always been to apply a drop in the salary that we receive, because we fully understand that this is an exceptional situation and we are the first ones who have ALWAYS helped the club when asked to do so," reads in the first lines of the extensive writing.

In the text, the athlete hinted at an internal conflict between the soccer players and the club's management, since they assure that there were "pressures" to carry out this action, which had already been taken before.

"It never ceases to amaze us that from within the club there were those who tried to put us under the magnifying glass and tried to add pressure to us to do something that we always knew we would do," he said.

"In fact, if the agreement has been delayed for a few days it is simply because we were looking for a formula to help the club and also its workers in these difficult times," he added.

After clarifying the situation, the soccer players indicated that in addition to contributing a part of their salary, they will also make extra contributions for the same purpose.

"For our part, the time has come to announce that, apart from the reduction of 70% of our salary during the State of Alarm, we will also make contributions so that club employees can collect 100% of their salary while this situation lasts. "

Finally, the Barca players took advantage of this statement to also send their followers a message of hope and best wishes in these difficult times.

"We do not want to say goodbye without sending an affectionate greeting and a lot of strength to all the Catalans who are having a hard time in these very difficult times, as well as to all those who patiently await the end of this crisis in their homes. Very soon we will leave this and we will do it together ", concludes the text.
