Berlin (dpa / tmn) - Insects no longer find sufficient food and shelter in many places - but any amateur gardener can do something about it even on a small property or balcony. Firstly, with insect-friendly plants. On the other hand, with simple DIY ideas that can be implemented even without an additional purchase. Three suggestions:

1. Stack some old wood

Do you still have a few logs left over from the winter supply for the stove? From there in a garden corner. Cut remnants from the garden can also be added. For example, the common holey bee, the blue-black carpenter bee, the common wasp, the gold rose beetle or the common ram, explains the German Nature Conservation Association (Nabu). For them, dead wood is food, hiding place or building material.

2. Set up a bowl of mud

Insect help can be so simple: clay, clay or loess that is kept moist is a valuable building material for many insects. You can simply put it on an open floor or put it in a planting bowl. And in some gardens it is enough to use your own loamy soil.

3. Provide drinking water

Speaking of mud: on warm days, a clay puddle is a great offer for insects for other reasons - it becomes a watering hole. The Nabu advises to lay a layer of clay or clay 15 to 20 centimeters thick in a hollow, solidify and fill with water.

The simpler alternative is to set up a bowl full of water. If you put stones or marbles into it, you help the animals to climb out of the water if they fall into it.
