Tulips, cherry trees, apple trees: we are closed in the house and we look at the spring blooms with renewed wonder, from the balconies, from the terraces, from the garden for the lucky ones who have it. In the bad period that the whole world is experiencing for the coronavirus pandemic, in an uncertain time that forces us into the house and prevents us from planning short-term holidays, trips out of town at Easter and spring bridges, if not until summer certainty comes from nature. Flowers, flowers everywhere. It is spring, despite everything.

Tulips

We see them emerge from the windowsills, in bowls and vases on the balconies and terraces; flourish at the foot of trees in parks; form beautiful cut bouquets. Tulips keep intact the charm that made them merchandise exchanged for gold in the years of the European Tulipomania of the seventeenth century, when there were those who, mad, abandoned everything, including businesses and houses, for a bag of bulbs di Tulipa with dizzying prices. Nowadays prices have returned to normal, but their beauty remains intact. Difficult to resist the cup corollas that sway in the wind on long stems. Just plant the bulbs in loose soil enriched with leaf compost in the autumn, and in the spring - Houzz tells us, in the spring gardens section - green leaves will begin to emerge, rolled one on top of the other on the center, from which it will then develop the flower.

Flowering apple trees
In spring we see them dotting gardens, vegetable gardens, parks and wild fields with their white, pink or red flowers; they bring clusters of melines lit as light bulbs in late summer and yellow and bronze leaves in autumn; they are flowering apple trees, beautiful all year round. Some varieties keep the colorful fruits on the plant throughout the winter, making the birds happy; sometimes the fruits are also useful for jellies and jams. Generous in blooms and easy to grow, apple trees like the sun, half shade in the southernmost regions; the soil must be fresh, moderately moist and fertile, no matter whether calcareous or acidic. They do not require pruning, just remove the dry or malformed branches. Among the most interesting varieties for the garden or terrace, Malus 'Red Sentinel', with white flowers and bright red melines that persist on the plant until the end of winter; M. 'Golden Hornet', with white flowers and golden yellow fruits; M. 'Evereste', with red buds and white petals, bears yellow-orange fruit.

The poetry of the cherry trees
The inevitable white and pink clouds of flowering cherry trees, with branches covered with bunches of flowers surrounded by bronze leaves, which with the passing of the days fade into green. Majestic and at the same time light, they bring to mind the depictions of the hanami, the Japanese custom of admiring the blooming of the sakura - the cherry trees - setting up picnics under the flowering trees. Even a single potted specimen is a sight, even in autumn when the leaves are tinged with gold and orange.
