Defective nurses and smocks in Marseille: "An earthquake in La Timone"

2020-04-06T14:06:58.349Z

The state of the smocks received this weekend by the nursing staff of La Timone hospital in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) is controversial.

“Be careful, we received the new blouses, the Americans didn't want them on the tarmac. I take it delicately, you never know what's going to happen, and hello, hello, my hand has gone through. ” These words are taken from a video that has been very successful since its publication on Saturday on social networks.

In this scene, which takes place at La Timone hospital in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), we can see a healthcare team made up of several nurses who opens a new box of gowns intended for the nursing staff of the AP-HM (Public Assistance - Hospitals of Marseille). One of them films the scene.

Very quickly, the nurse who dresses sees the blouse go to shreds as she puts on her equipment. "This is how I will get into a covid room," worries the caregiver.

Another video, also very popular, shows that the blouses are just out of their packaging. In the background, we hear a manager alert someone on the phone about the disastrous state of smocks that do not allow "to take samples from children with Covid".

The management of La Timone, contacted by Le Parisien, wanted to provide us with details on the videos which "had first been broadcast on a private discussion group reserved for our staff". According to the first elements, the nurse filmed on this video did not wish to make these images public on social networks.

Exceptionally a lot may be defective, according to the AP-HM

And according to the establishment of the 5th arrondissement of the city of Marseille, a prompt investigation also made it possible to take stock of the state of the medical equipment. “At this stage, it appears that the storage conditions of these coats (humid place) would be the reason for this condition. But it is too early to determine the point of origin of this deterioration ”, one explains to La Timone. "New protective clothing was immediately sent to the service this weekend and checks were made to verify that all the services had necessary and compliant stocks," said the management of the public hospital.

In addition, the AP-HM (Public Assistance - Hospitals of Marseille) specifies that personal protective equipment is checked by sampling before distribution. "The very large quantities consumed and therefore distributed every day mean that batches, on a very small scale and exceptionally, can be defective," defends the institution.

"We are on the bone"

On the union side, the meeting was confirmed by the management of a nurse involved in the internal distribution of the video. This hearing will take place this Wednesday. There is also a certain climate of fear. "The nurses made the video and since the direction puts pressure on them if they speak publicly," says Yves Castino, CGT secretary of the Marseille establishment. “They are young nurses, it is the first time that they have been summoned. They were overwhelmed by the virality of their video. We will not let it happen. Rather, it is up to management to report on the conditions in which we work, ”warns the union representative.

“This story created an earthquake in La Timone. The staff are on edge, anxious and angry. They cannot afford to work properly, either in terms of the number of respirators or the quality of the equipment, ”worries the staff member. "They can not surprise, we are already on the bone for an epidemic of bronchiolitis or flu", further annoys Yves Castino. According to a union source, the two nurses at the center of the video do not wish to speak, preferring to "let the pressure down a bit".
