Easy to announce, the order given by the government these days to wear protective masks when leaving home has proved problematic for a large category of people in Israel: the observant Jews who grow a beard in accordance with the dictates of religion .
Among the first to notice the problem was the director of Magen David Adom (local equivalent of the Red Cross) Ely Bin according to which the protective material available to his medical staff "does not guarantee protection to the bearer".
Therefore he has forbidden them to approach "coronavirus patients, or even those who are only suspected of being so".
The theological question of whether it is lawful for an observant Jew to shave his face in extreme situations has thus passed to the Grand Rabbinate of Jerusalem. Meanwhile, the influential rabbi Shmuel Eliahu has already established that "just as it is allowed to break sabbatical rest when lives are in danger, the same is true in these circumstances".
The deputy director general of the ministry of health, Itamar Grotto, surprisingly joined the debate, who revealed on military radio that "in these days a special mask is being developed for those with beards". Meanwhile, advertisements appear in the Orthodox press proposing another way out. They offer transparent protective visors, such as those used by gardeners, that "prevent being infected or spreading the virus" and which also "do not bother" those who wear beards.
