The World Athletics Championships in Oregon (United States) were rescheduled from July 15 to 24, 2022, following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event, originally scheduled for 6-15 August 2021, was moved to the following year to avoid concurrence with the Olympic and Paralympic games.

The World Athletics Council approved the new dates this week after a series of discussions with stakeholders, including the organizers of two other major leagues to be held in July-August 2022: the Commonwealth Games of Birmingham 2022 and the European multisport Championships in Monaco.

The new program will avoid a direct 'conflict' between these important events and, with careful planning, will guarantee athletes the opportunity to take part in up to three world-class competitions.

In an extraordinary international season for athletics, all three events will take place during an unprecedented summer of sport. "This will be a boon for athletics fans all over the world - said the president of the World Athletics Federation Sebastian Coe - They will have six weeks of absolutely top level athletics. Over 70 of our Federations are part of the Commonwealth and more than 50 of our Federations are European ".
