(ANSA) - COLOMBO, APRIL 12 - A special Easter was celebrated in Sri Lanka today, also commemorating the anniversary of the jihadist massacres in several churches that cost the lives of 279 people. The head of the local Catholic church, during the lamessa, said he had "forgiven" the suicide bombers.
"We offer our love to the enemies who wanted to destroy us," Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said during the homily broadcast on TV, due to the coronavirus epidemic. And he added that instead of taking revenge, the Catholic minority of Sri Lanka embraced the message of peace of Jesus Christ and reduced tensions. On April 21, 2019, three churches and three luxury hotels were targeted by several commandos simultaneously, resulting in 279 deaths and 593 injured. After the attacks, attributed to the Jihadist group National Thowheeth Jama'ath, 135 people were arrested.
