Bruises and blisters on the feet, a new symptom of the coronavirus?

2020-04-16T16:55:14.446Z

In Spain, several cases presented mainly in children and adolescents of foot injuries associated with COVID-19 are studied.

Little by little, more findings have been made about the symptoms, the behavior in the body and the treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 virus , which causes the COVID-19 disease.

Cough, high fever, and muscle pain are some of the best-known signs of this condition, but more have been added in recent weeks, such as loss of smell, taste, and episodes of diarrhea.

Many coronavirus investigations have been started around the world and most are related to the search for the vaccine, a volunteer has already received a dose of the first test of an experimental vaccine. Spain there is an investigation that would verify that SARS-CoV-2 also causes skin lesions, mainly on the feet.

Health workers in Spain have reported numerous cases of children and young people infected with coronavirus who at some point in the disease presented bruises, rashes or lesions similar to those of measles on the feet , but also on the hands and arms.

People with these symptoms have increased, so the Spanish Academy of Dermatology opened an investigation last week named "COVID-Skin" .

"It is very important to categorize these manifestations on the skin to be able to relate their presence as a symptom in the diagnosis of COVID-19, this is especially relevant in asymptomatic cases," the institution said in a statement to the media.

In the community of Córdova alone, three positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed that presented bruises on the feet. The first of them was a teenager.

"It is a curious finding that began to spread yesterday in the healthcare field, among dermatologists and podiatrists, fundamentally: more and more the same symptoms are being detected in patients with COVID-19, especially children and adolescents, although some case in adults. These are purple-colored lesions (very similar to those of chickenpox, measles or chilblains) that usually manifest around the toes and that usually heal without leaving marks on the skin, "explained the General Council of Official Colleges of Podiatrists in a statement published on its website.

The “COVID-Skin” study also has reports of this possible symptom in Italy and France , which is why skin specialists have asked medical authorities around the world to be aware of the presence of such injuries.

So far the investigation is in a evidence-gathering phase, so the rash and bruising cannot be made official as an "official symptom" of COVID-19.

Although the Spanish health authorities ask not to be alarmed by this new information, they advise the population to quarantine children and adolescents who will come to present the marks on their feet, hands or arms, just as a precaution.
