Candles and birthdays on Skype: how many people are born in April?

2020-04-16T17:34:37.215Z

Historically, April is the fourth month of the year with the most births and May ... the third.

Laura Revuelta was only congratulated face to face on her last birthday by her dog Joy and her neighbors, with whom she shares an interior patio that she named during the quarantine as the fantasy patio. The name was given to him after several days enjoying the songs that two of his neighbors play with a transverse flute and a trumpet. Nino Bravo, Sabina and Disney classics play every day at 20:00 in the Madrid neighborhood of Prosperidad after the collective applause. On April 5 the chords that were played were dedicated to her, she was 32 years old and her mother, from San Sebastián (Basque Country), partnered with a neighbor so that her daughter had a surprise from the fantasy-patio.

In addition to the congratulations from balcony to balcony and the ones that some local police officers dedicate to the birthday boys these days, many of us already have a few videos in our quarantine portfolio to surprise family and friends with birthdays. Perhaps that has made you think that in March and April, the months that we have been at home for the moment, you have more birthdays than in other times, but the truth is that if we look at the data we see that, historically, in May there is an average more birthdays a day than in April. Therefore, if the alarm status is extended until next month and your imagination to make original gifts is running out, you can resort to the birth data offered by the INE and congratulate the next friend telling him if his date is one of the most popular to be born or not. For example, on the same day in April that Laura Revuelta was born, 112,045 people came into the world from 1921 to 2019.

Thanks to the interactive tool that the INE offers (click here to see the mobile version), we see how on April 5 it occupies the number 106 in the ranking of days that more babies have been born. From these data we have ordered the days of April from highest to lowest according to the number of births registered. Day 1 is the most popular (117,661) and, in addition, it is the seventh date in the annual calendar in which more children have been born historically. The next April days with the most birthdays are the 14th (116,374) and the next 25th (115,842).

As for the days of May with the highest number of births, we find that the winner is on the 15th, when in some towns such as Madrid San Isidro is celebrated, with 117,789 registrations. Also, this day is the sixth with the most birthdays in the last century. 3 and 10 are the next most popular days of May to be born.

Although April has six days that are among the 50 most popular to celebrate years in the annual ranking , it is not the month in which the most Spaniards have been born since they have records. That is September, with 1,143 births on average every day. It is followed by March (1,139) and May (1,137), which indicates to us that, if during this month we believe that we have had many video calls to congratulate birthdays, it is possible that as soon as May begins we will have some more. April is the fourth month with the most births a day, 1,135 on average.

Holidays are no longer key to conceiving

The time in which more mothers have left accounts has been changing throughout the last 100 years. As we published a while ago, in the 1970s and 1980s May was a month with many births. The main reason was that nine months earlier the calendar stopped in August, the month in which in industrial Spain workers enjoyed paid vacations and had more time to spend family life. Since the nineties, September is the month with the most births.

If we take a look at how the evolution of April has been in the ranking of the months with the most births decade by decade, we see that it has not been the favorite month to give birth in any. In fact, in the last one, that of 2010, it is the month in which fewer children are born.
