Istat: with the lockdown stop to the activity for 2.1 million companies

"The formally suspended activities concern 2.1 million companies (just under 48 percent of the total), which employ 7.1 million employees (of which 4.8 million employees)". "These companies generate, on the basis of 2017 data, 1334 billion euros of turnover (41.4 percent of the overall level) and 309 billion of added value (39.5 percent of the total)".

With reference to the main economic macro-sectors, the closure measures concerned the industry in a more pervasive way : almost two thirds of industrial enterprises, which represent 46.8 percent of turnover and 53.2 percent of value added the macro-sector, have had to suspend their activities ", he underlines the Istat. In the tertiary sectoron the other hand, "the incidence of companies operating in sectors whose business is interrupted is 43.8 percent, 37.2 percent in terms of turnover and 29.9 percent in terms of added value". The suspension, it should be noted, "has a greater impact on the industrial sector also from an employment point of view: 59.3 per cent of employees in the sector refer to suspended activities, compared to 35.2 per cent in services". In addition, the sectors currently suspended "represent 63.9 percent of exports of goods and account for 20.4 percent of turnover abroad".

"The suspension of activities has affected in particular in the North-East (where 50.1 percent of employment belongs to suspended activities) and in the North-West (43.3 percent), while the share is gradually lower in the center (41.3 percent), in the South (41.1 percent) and in the Islands (33.6 percent) ". Istat notes this in the report where it updated the data on the effects of the lockdown.
