The Munich event agency GRAL wants to set up a temporary drive-in cinema on Theresienwiese. The facility could also be used for concerts and church services.

The Munich event agency GRAL wants to set up a temporary drive-in cinema on Theresienwiese. The facility could also be used for concerts and church services.

For Alex Wolfrum the thing is clear: “Like many other people, we finally want to experience a sense of community again. At least a little bit. ”That is why the Munich and the team of his event agency GRAL have been working on a special project for a few days: They would like to set up a temporary drive-in cinema on Theresienwiese - so that cultural experience is possible during the Corona crisis.

Drive-in cinema is permitted in other federal states

In other federal states, drive-in cinemas have resumed play despite Corona, since the visit can be handled without any problems. It is still prohibited in Bavaria. Wolfrum is still in good spirits and wants to talk to the city about his plan next week ("Then our floor plans will be so that we can present them to the fire department").

The event manager is no stranger to Munich's cultural life. From 1995 to 2016, the GRAL (the four letters stand for "thorough realization of general joie de vivre") organized the cinema open air on the Königsplatz. "If we can do something, it will be big screens," Wolfrum says in an interview with the "Münchner Merkur". His company is currently mainly on the Internet, organizes online trade fairs and other virtual events, and prepares digital events, including a film premiere. "But," admits the managing director, "we miss people."

"Make a drive-in in Munich!"

Four partners from the fields of technology and gastronomy had recently come to his company with the request "Make a drive-in cinema in Munich!" - for example, illuminant manufacturer Osram offered to equip the toilets on Theresienwiese with a special UV lighting system that air and air Can make surfaces virus free after each visit. GRAL is also currently holding talks with potential sponsors: "Despite the tight budget, many companies are sympathetic to our idea."

The drive-in cinema is supposed to be an alternative to the domestic couch

The plan currently stipulates that a maximum of 680 cars with two occupants each will be parked in front of the screen per performance. This measures 24 by 12 meters, so it would have an area of 288 square meters. It would start with darkness, there would be a maximum of two performances per evening. "The effort is so enormous that we would have to play every day," reports Wolfrum. Nevertheless, he expects a ticket price of just a little more than ten euros per person. “We need a competitive streaming offer. We want to counter the couch at home a bit. ”He has no information about the program yet. Just so much: current cinema films such as "The Kangaroo Chronicles" should be requested - and Helmut Dietl's cult series "Monaco Franze" with Helmut Fischer is a must for him.

Worship and concerts in the drive-in cinema?

If the drive-in cinema is approved, if everything goes according to plan it could be in a month or so: film off! Alex Wolfrum also wants to open the facility to others - from church services to concerts, a lot is conceivable; Here too there are already examples from other federal states. And why the Theresienwiese? “Of course we also check other locations. But we want to be in the heart of the city - and in the heart of Munich. ”
