Coronavirus: "What proportion of people admitted to intensive care who get out?"

2020-04-22T15:04:12.137Z

For the 13th consecutive day, there are more outings than entrances to the resuscitation services in France.

Every day, Le Parisien takes action to answer your questions about the coronavirus. Today, Mélina asks us what is the share of people admitted to intensive care who "manage". "We hear about the number of people healed, but never the number of people out of intensive care," said this user.

For several days now, during his daily check-up, the Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon has mentioned, in addition to the number of healings, deaths and hospitalizations, the number of patients who come out of intensive care. If he does not give the total share of these trips since the start of the epidemic, he nevertheless mentions that of the last 24 hours.

4.6% outings in 24 hours

On Tuesday, for example, there were 5,433 people currently admitted to intensive care, including 190 new arrivals in 24 hours. "This balance remains negative for the 13th consecutive day with 250 fewer patients," said the Director General of Health. That is to say that between Monday and Tuesday, 250 patients released a intensive care bed, or 4.6% of the total number of current admissions. Note that the median length of admission is, according to data from Public Health France, 7 days. However, it is difficult to know if these people are "getting by", as our reader put it, since it is not impossible that after their resuscitation, some of these patients are forced to return , or even die a little later.

What we do know is that the resuscitation entry and exit curves have been crossing since April 9. That day, there were, for the first time, more departures than admissions to the resuscitation services in France.

In its last epidemiological point, the public health organization France also delivers information on these resuscitation outings. Please note, these data are not complete, since they only concern cases reported by 144 intensive care units. Of the 2,806 admissions they have identified since March 16, to April 14, a month later, 646 people had left, or 26% of them (with a median length of stay of 7 days). There are also 291 deaths (10% of the total number of resuscitations).

10% returned directly to their home

In order to give you an idea of what becomes of these patients who leave intensive care, we asked the question to the Regional Health Agency of Île-de-France. Of the 2,898 people who left intensive care between April 1 and April 19 in the region, based on the available data, we learn that 40% of them returned to “conventional hospitalization”, 10% returned directly to their home and 26% died.

Note that these data only relate to Île-de-France and can obviously vary from one region to another. The number of people who are currently in intensive care proves to be an indicator very scrutinized by professionals, because it is a barometer attesting to the pressure on the hospital system. Tuesday evening, the Director General of Health also concluded his assessment by insisting on one point: "What we do today and tomorrow conditions the number of patients in intensive care on May 11.
