Museum awakening: the province before Paris?

Less frequented, less large but more adaptable, some large provincial museums may well reopen before the Parisian behemoths. Report to the Art Museum of Nantes which has already drawn up its reopening plan.


Like all museums stamped "Musées de France", that of Nantes has been in use since March 15. A case study, as dramatic as the 1,220 others scattered over the territory. With this particularity that this jewel of the arts born under Napoleon had been modernized and enlarged by a third in 2017, after six years of work and an investment of 88.5 million euros.

Some 3,500 m2 of restored 19th century canopy glass, an extension of 2,000 m2 dedicated to contemporary art, an auditorium with 160 seats, educational workshop rooms, a library, shops and event spaces: the Nantes conurbation was then, by this equipment, the demonstration that culture was a major axis for its development. Since then, the institution has participated perfectly in tourism capital, cultural influence and the educational effort required. At the rate of 325,000 annual visitors, 16% of whom are foreigners, mostly European.
