The sirens of the port of Genoa howled to celebrate the event. The last section of the new bridge in Genoa is in place. The new structure replaces the Morandi motorway bridge which collapsed in August 2018 and left 43 dead, including 4 French.
According to the head of the Italian government Giuseppe Conte, he new bridge “is a symbolic site for all of Italy, it is the site of Italy which knows how to get up, which rolls up its sleeves, which cannot be put down, don't let go ”.
However, this does not mark the end of this titanic project. The bridge must still be covered with asphalt, solar panels and transparent windbreaks must be installed.
"We hope to see the first vehicles cross the bridge by the end of July," said Pietro Salini, boss of the construction company Salini Impregilo, who built the bridge.
