Deconfinement: back to class, an equation with several unknowns

2020-04-29T20:38:25.134Z

The scenario of a gradual resumption of prices from May 11 is written in broad outline, but the details remain to be determined. The poin

The comparison will speak to parents who, for six weeks, have occupied their child in the kitchen. "Preparing for the reopening of classes on May 11 is like writing a cake recipe without knowing the ingredients available: it's very hard," says Olivier Flipo, director of an elementary school in Val-d ' Oise and union representative (SE-Unsa).

In the aftermath of Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's speech, Tuesday, April 28, on the Covid-19 crisis and deconfinement, the school world, parents included, is in the middle of the ford. The national health protocol on reception conditions is due to appear on Friday 1 May. The sites of each academy inspection will publish the following week, Thursday May 7 at the latest, the terms for the start of the school year, school by school. Already, meetings are being organized on all stages of National Education to resolve the deconfinement equation. Here are the parameters ... and the unknowns.

In kindergarten

Monday May 11 will be a pre-entry for teachers: the next day the children will return to school. Their presence remains at the whim of families, and will be limited to 15 children per class: the rule applies in kindergarten as in elementary.

"In the vast majority of cases, it is not full-time that the child will go to school", explained this Wednesday April 20, at the microphone of RMC, the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer . Rather than half-days, a real headache for parents, the Minister favors alternating groups by "half-week" or every other week.

Adults in the school will be fitted with masks, but children will not. Wearing them is "prohibited" for children under 6, according to Jean-Michel Blanquer, because of the risks of misuse, and dangerous games.

In the kindergarten of Benjamin Arassus, in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis), the teaching team is reflecting on "a marking on the ground in the school, with a course thought out so that the children do not cross" and arrivals in class "staggered every twenty minutes", explains this teacher of large section, unionized at Snuipp-FSU. But the scenario remains very hypothetical: the town hall of its commune, like many others, threatens not to reopen these establishments. "We are waiting to see," breathes the teacher.

What we do not know: the rules concerning the entry of parents into school. In many kindergartens, there is also the question of napping, many dormitories being too small to put mattresses a meter away.

From CP to CM2

In addition to continuing distance education, students will be hosted, alternately, either at school, or at study or sports and cultural activities of the town, if it provides. National Education has ordered for each elementary school a stock of “pediatric” masks, of small size, usable for specific cases only, for example if a pupil presents symptoms and while waiting for his parents to pick him up.

The canteen may be maintained, provided that children have lunch in small groups. Another solution considered: the picnic “box”, taken in the classroom. The scientific council also recommends, in the rooms, a meter distance between each office. "That means 4m2 per student! Even in my large class, I do not house 15 students in these conditions, not to mention that the last row will be found 9 m from the board, "calculates Johanna, CP teacher in Seine-Maritime. For this teacher who is an “active” pedagogist, who teaches children “to work together, move around the classroom and share equipment”, the new standards are heartbreaking. "What we will do is anything but school," she sighs.

What we don't know . The health protocol must specify whether hydroalcoholic gel will be available in elementary. It is also unclear whether the resumption of lessons will correspond to revisions, or the learning of new concepts: "educational sheets", class by class, are expected to clarify this point.

To college

In the departments classified as "green" (where the virus circulates little), the pupils of 6th and 5th will return to class on May 18, with a mask on their nose, while their elders of 4th and 3rd will stay at home. An organization which poses a huge problem: how can teachers, who are in charge of several levels, teach one, while ensuring that the others work remotely? At the ministry, it is assured that "they will not give face-to-face and distance courses the same day" and that local organizations will make it possible to find solutions.

At Emmanuel-Dupaty College in Blanquefort (Gironde), the classes of 29 students on average will be split in two. The half-groups could come every other week - the simplest solution to avoid redoing all the schedules within a month and a half of the summer holidays. In any case, not all teachers will be able to physically return to the classroom. "As soon as you are at risk, you stay at home, student and teacher," said Jean-Michel Blanquer on Wednesday.

Whether at home or at college, "in any case, we must not be too ambitious: it will above all be to consolidate the foundations, but not to tackle new concepts", believes Nicolas Bonnet, the principal of the college of Blanquefort, also departmental secretary at SNPDEN-Unsa. He worries especially for his pupils of 3rd: "they must make their wishes of orientation at the end of May, and we will not see them again until then to accompany them ..."

What we don't know . It is not known how the distance courses will be provided, and whether there will be bulletins in the 3rd quarter.

In high school

At the earliest, high school students would resume on Thursday, June 4. But among teachers and principals, we prepare without hiding too much to see the students again in September only. Why ? "Because it's impossible to do otherwise!" We can follow the recommendations of the scientific council if we have a small number of students, but from a certain threshold, we can no longer ”, replies Pascale Le Flem, principal of a school town of 1850 students, in Redon (Ille-et-Vilaine) and academic secretary of SNPDEN-Unsa.

According to the plan sketched out by the Prime Minister, students in professional fields would have priority in the event of reopening, in particular to follow their workshops. In the Lycée de Redon, "it would be possible for the masonry or carpentry CAPs, because they are very small groups," said the headmistress, "but not for everyone." "

The oral French, scheduled for late June for the 1st, is maintained at this stage and could take place even if the lycées are not reopened. In addition, even if classes were not to resume physically, the end of the year on July 4 "remains a benchmark," says Jean-Michel Blanquer. "If the student is not in the classroom, he still has the obligation to take classes at home," said one in the minister's office. The instruction obligation remains. "

Schools, however, were instructed not to enter notes during the confinement period on student orientation records. "But the teachers' assessments will weigh, especially if a student has shown during the period that he has worked to raise the bar," promises Pascale Le Flem.

What we don't know . It is not known whether the terminales who must pass the catch-up oral exam in the bac will be able to prepare it with their teachers in high school. It is also unclear how the “attendance” of students will be taken into account during confinement in the continuous assessment notes.
