Irrfan Khan, one of the best-known actors in India, remained in a hospital for complications from his cancer.

The Indian actor Irrfan Khan , known for his participation in films such as "Slumdog Millionaire", "The Life of Pi" or "Jurassic World", died Wednesday at the age of 53.

His representative agency issued a statement in this regard. "He died surrounded by his love, by his family, he went to heaven leaving a true legacy. We all pray and hope that he is at peace."

It should be noted that the actor, one of the best known and beloved in India, remained in a Mumbai hospital for complications derived from the neuroendocrine tumor that he suffered since 2018.

It was two years ago when the Bollywood star made his illness known, and through a statement said he was hopeful, expressed the intensity of the pain and reflected on the uncertainty in life.

"Discovering that I have been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor has been difficult, but the love and strength of those around me and what I found in myself have led me to hope," he said at the time.

"Life has no obligation to give us what we expect," Khan wrote, quoting a quote from Margaret Mitchell . After initiating a long treatment that he underwent in London, the actor was able to act in his latest film, "Angrezi Medium", whose release was postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.

The actor was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with a colon infection from which he could not recover. Khan was married to screenwriter Sutapa Sikdar and had two children, Babil and Ayan .

Just a few days ago, Irrfan was very saddened by the death of his mother in Jaipur, and had to witness the funeral remotely via video link from Mumbai due to the confinement decreed in India by the coronavirus.

Khan started his career in the Bollywood film industry at the age of 22, debuting in Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay" in 1988, and that work would mark his future, as the film was a success in Cannes and at the European box office, in addition of being nominated for an Oscar.

He subsequently rose to international fame for his roles in "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Life of Pi". He also played roles in such tapes as "The Amazing Spider-Man", "Jurassic World" and 'Inferno', among others.

After failing as a cricket player in his youth, Irrfan began his training at a drama school and worked on several television series.

"I entered this industry to tell stories and make movies and I was stuck on television," he told The Guardian in 2013. In that same interview, he was rejecting the term Bollywood.

"It is not fair. Because this industry has its own technique, its own way of counting far from Hollywood and based on the Parsi theater," he said.
