(ANSA) - LONDON, MAY 1 - Due to the coronavirus, the controversial expansion project for Heathrow airport in London - which is already the busiest airport in Europe - is "at least two years old". The same airport announced it today.
"Heathrow's expansion remains a fundamental part of our long-term strategy after we have defeated Covid-19 and entered the recovery phase. However, given the current pandemic crisis and with the appeal underway, we expect the expansion and the tied investments will be delayed for at least two years ", read the press release from the London airport.
British justice ruled against environmentalists on 27 February against the construction of a third runway, but Heathrow appealed to the Supreme Court. The construction of a third runway at Heathrow should allow the airport to accommodate 130 million passengers per year, compared to the current 78 million. The works were to start in 2022 and last 4 years
