(ANSA) - NEW YORK, MAY 3 - Rental strike. Forced home without a salary, the Americans aim to achieve an ambitious goal: to convince the government to suspend the payment of rents and mortgages until the coronavirus has loosened its grip on the economy.
The movement asking for a stop is being organized online with the hashtag #CancelRent which is rampant on social media.
To cancel the payment of rents and mortgages, the government should intervene on the real estate market, private suicide contracts and order banks and owners to say that they do not collect payments. An intervention without precedents, which many consider unconstitutional.
But the movement is still catching on and sees the success of Occupy Wall Street after the financial crisis of 2008. As demand for suspension of payments spreads, homeowners ask the authorities not to intervene: doing so would mean triggering dangerous bankruptcy consequences and lower revenue for states.
