Surprise! The whimsical director of Thor Ragnarok has just been dubbed by Disney and Lucasfilms. It will stage a new episode of the famous intergalactic saga.

We thought that the word end had settled permanently in the depths of distant galaxies, very distant, after the release of episode IX The Ascension of Skywalker , directed by JJAbrams.

No! Taking advantage of Star Wars Day , the Disney studios create the surprise and announce in full confinement that Taika Waititi, Oscar winner for the best adaptation for Jojo Rabbit and director of the final episode of the first season of The Mandalorian on Disney + will direct and co-write a new feature film Star Wars for a future theatrical release.

Krysty Wilson-Cairns ( 1917 , Last night in Soho ) will be by his side for the script. The latter received for 1917 a BAFTA rewarding the most remarkable British film of the year and was nominated for the Oscar for best original script for this same film.

A new Star Wars series for Disney +

Other news, this one less surprising. Named Emmy for Russian Doll and Bachelorette, Leslye Headland is developing a new Star Wars series for Disney +. His title has not been released.

She will officiate as showrunner of this series in development which she will write and of which she will be executive producer. This new fiction reinforces a growing list of Star Wars stories destined for the Disney + streaming platform, including The Mandalorian (whose season 2 is now in post-production) and two other previously ordered series: one based on Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One: a Star Wars Story. And another recounting the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi located between Revenge of the Sith and Un Nouvel Espoir .

The release date of the Star Wars project led by Taika Waititi has not yet been announced, while the Headland project is under development.
