American colleges in crisis. The coronavirus closes them and forces them to online lessons, causing a student uprising. From California to Florida, from Ohio to Texas, thousands of students ask for fees back and file lawsuits against universities that do not intend to do so. An unprecedented crisis is looming for the American university system that could push several colleges to close.
Nobody is saved from the pressing requests for reimbursement, neither the public colleges nor those of the Ivy League, with class action filed against the prestigious Columbia University but also against the state Perdue. And the data provided by Harvard present an insight into the seriousness of the emergency: the university expects a drop in revenues of 1.2 billion dollars in the next two academic years between the drop in demand, the reimbursement of what students have paid for the accommodation and cancellation of summer programs. "We face significant financial difficulties that will require tough choices in the coming months. It is clear that further cost cutting measures will be needed, including the possibility of dismissing part of the workforce," says Harvard executive vice president, Katie Lapp. The risk is that teachers will end up in the cleaver of cuts, many of whom are considered the only asset at the moment of value given that the classes have been transferred online. Classes that, however, do not receive consensus: many students complain that teachers are limited to uploading documents or assignments without instructions. To worry is the fact that the controversy seems to be only at the beginning considering that it is not yet clear when the students will be able to return to class.
