(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 10 - On the eve of what should have been the departure date (May 12) of the 73rd edition of Cannes, first postponed and then suspended indefinitely for the coronavirus emergency, the general delegate Thierry Fremauxtoglie the last doubts about the possibility of the festival taking place on the Croisette in the autumn. "As of today, it is difficult to imagine a 'physical' edition of Cannes 2020, so we will have to do something different," he explained in an interview withScreen International.
In any case, the Festival will announce a selection of titles, without competition, at the beginning of June: "We want to promote the films that we have seen and loved, from all over the world. Wonderful works that it is our duty to help find an audience".
If the festival had run regularly, they probably would have debuted on the Croisette, says Fremaux, films such as Wes Anderson's TheFrench Dispatch, Nanni Moretti's Three Plans and Pete Docter's Sooul which he considers "fantastic." If now "they will go elsewhere, I will be very happy for them. The most important thing is that the largest number of spectators can see them". In addition, after the controversy of the past years, Netflix would return out of competition on the Croisette, thanks to Da 5 Bloods, the new film by Spike Lee, who had been designated as president of the international jury ("I hope Lee will be next year").
The general delegate confirms the intention of a collaboration between Cannes and the main autumn festivals, through the sharing of some titles, mainly with Venice, but also with Toronto, Deauville, Angouleme, San Sebastian, New York, Busan in South Korea and the Lumièrefestival from Lyon. Fremaux does not offer details on how the collaborations will work: "We are working on it, these plans depend on how the health situation will be. We will know more in June". (HANDLE).
