Faced with the collapse of tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic, the government of Peru has decided to encourage national and, as far as possible, international activity, providing free admission to 55 museums and archaeological sites and 22 natural parks on the national territory.
Peru is, in Latin America, second only to Brazil by number of infections (68,822) and fourth in the ranking of the dead (1,961), after Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador.
In this context, the Peruvian Official Gazette today published a decree of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism which authorizes, first of all the Peruvian population, but also foreign citizens present on the national territory, to enter freely from 1 July to 31 December 2020 "in the archaeological sites, museums, historical places and natural areas of the country".
Thus, for example, the mythical sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the network of 'Camini degli Incas', the city of Cuzco and the Lines and geoglyphs of Nazca will be accessible without paying the ticket.
In the preliminary considerations to the decree, it is observed that in March "the arrival of tourists from abroad to Peru had a 70% decrease, that is a negative flow of 260,000 people".
Furthermore, "it is expected that between April and July there will be a 100% fall in tourist arrivals from other countries, given that we have not yet reached the stage of containment of the virus.
For internal tourism - it is finally specified - the decrease will certainly be more than 40%, all with losses for the sector estimated at 700 million dollars ". The decree is accompanied by the allocation of a reasonable sum to allow tourist areas to adapt to new visitor health safety protocols.
