The film director and music producer remembers the jazz pianist, who was a modernist, an advanced, someone who did not follow fashions or trends


Andrew Hill was a very special, different musician. In the sixties he was one of the musicians of Blue Note, where he published a dozen albums and participated in many others. But Hill cannot be said to represent the Blue Note style. Hill was always, more than an original, who was, an innovator. So much so that his music is still innovative, years after his death.

He made some more accessible records, such as  Black Fire or Grass Roots , but without losing his powerful personality at any time.

In '64 he published  Point of Departure , which is like a manifesto. Although it was his fifth album, it was like the real beginning. And that style, that sound, that concept, was faithful to the end without ever repeating itself. Hill is a modernist, an advanced, someone who does not follow known paths or fashions or trends, but nevertheless beauty is always present.

In the Blue Note years it had luxury accomplices like Joe Henderson, Richard Davis, Ron Carter ... And in its last years it was opened to new generations: Greg Osby, Scott Colley, etc. His music is light. Its "difficulty" is attractive, enigmatic, transparent ...
