Many have longed for it and now it is finally within reach: After many weeks of closings and severe restrictions, the catering trade can open its doors again. However, despite all the joy, there is also a lot of uncertainty . Each state has its own rules and many guests and operators wonder what the opening looks like.

Restaurants and Co. open differently in every state

When exactly and how the restaurants are allowed to open again is clearly in the decision-making area of ​​the federal states. However, individual districts and municipalities can also set up separate rules. Different concepts should regulate the opening of the catering businesses (as of May 13, 2020)

How do the restaurants in Baden-Württemberg open?

In Baden-Württemberg, the gastronomy outside and inside are allowed from May 18th. to open again. There are strict requirements for the restaurants:

  • Limitation of opening hours
  • Elaboration of hygiene concepts by the companies
  • Ensuring a distance (min. 1.5 meters) from guests and tables

How do the restaurants in Bavaria open?

From 18.05. may open the outside catering trade, eg beer gardens. Indoor catering opens from 25.05. again. The same requirements apply to both areas:

  • Limitation of opening hours
  • Elaboration of hygiene concepts by the companies
  • Limiting the number of guests
  • Securing distance (separate entrance / exit, reservation required)
  • Disinfection of cutlery, tables and glasses
  • Mask requirement for employees in kitchen and service
  • Guests are required to wear a mask as soon as they leave the table (when entering, on the way to the toilet, etc.)
  • External astronomy must first close at 8 p.m.
  • Restaurants close at 10 p.m.

We open the restaurants in Berlin

In Berlin, the outdoor and indoor restaurants will open from May 15th. with the following requirements:

  • You are only allowed to stay on your own, accompanied by people from your own household or members of another household
  • Opening times limited to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Distance and hygiene rules must be observed
  • Mask requirement for employees
  • Minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the tables
  • no buffet offer
  • Delivery and collection offer may be retained
  • Queues must be avoided
  • Guests can only be served while seated at tables
  • Reservations are strongly recommended, as are attendance lists in which guests enter their full names, addresses and contact details (must be deleted after four weeks).

In Brandenburg, too, the restaurants will reopen from May 15th. Pubs are also allowed to resume operations here. These requirements apply:

How do the restaurants in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania open?

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the restaurants have been open since 09.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Employees must wear mouth and nose protection
  • Guests who are not seated at a table must keep a distance of 1.5 meters
  • no more than 6 people per table
  • no buffet or self-service offer
  • Tables, menus, pepper and salt shakers and all other things that guests come into contact with must be cleaned immediately after each table has been occupied.
  • Rooms with public traffic must be ventilated every two hours at the latest.

  • Hospitality only between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
  • Maintaining attendance lists in which guests enter their full name, address and contact details (must be deleted after the retention period has expired)

How do the restaurants in Lower Saxony open?

In Lower Saxony, the restaurants, pubs, outdoor beer gardens, snack bars and cafés have been open since 11.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • Minimum distance of 2 meters between the tables
  • Minimum distance of 1.5 meters between guests at different tables
  • Control of access
  • Restriction to a maximum of 50 percent of the places
  • Reservation obligation
  • Maintaining attendance lists in which guests enter their full name, address and contact details (must be deleted after the retention period has expired)
  • no buffet or self-service offer
  • Mask requirement for service employees
  • Maintaining attendance lists with the consent of the guest, in which the guests enter their full name, address and contact details (must be deleted after three weeks)

How do the restaurants in North Rhine-Westphalia open?

In North Rhine-Westphalia, restaurants, pubs, outdoor beer gardens, snack bars and cafés have been open since May 11th. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • Infection protection and hygiene concept of the companies must be available
  • general contact restrictions apply
  • Minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the tables
  • Only relatives in a straight line, siblings, spouses, life partners and people from a maximum of two different domestic communities may sit at the same table

How do the restaurants in Rhineland-Palatinate open?

Gastronomy businesses in Rhineland-Palatinate have been allowed since 13.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Opening times limited from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • Provision of disinfectant and regular disinfection of chairs and tables
  • Control of access
  • no free choice of seats
  • Guests can only be served while seated at tables
  • Minimum distance between the chairs from one table to the chairs of the next table is at least 1.5 meters
  • no bar operation
  • At most, the people who are not covered by the ban on contact may sit at one table. 
  • A maximum of six people older than 12 years may sit at outdoor beer tables.
  • Mask requirement for employees in contact with customers
  • Mask requirement for guests, but not directly at the table
  • Used dishes (cutlery, glasses, plates, etc.) must be cleaned in a dishwasher at a minimum of 60 degrees
  • Reservation obligation
  • Maintaining attendance lists in which guests enter their full name, address and contact details (must be deleted after the retention period has expired)

How do the restaurants in Saarland open?

In Saarland, restaurants, cafes, canteens and pubs are allowed from 18.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Opening times limited from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • Guests can only be served while seated at tables
  • no bar operation
  • Members of your own household, spouses, life partners and relatives in a straight line of the first degree as well as people from another household may sit at the same table

How do the restaurants in Saxony-Anhalt open?

In Saxony-Anhalt, the gastronomy may  from 15.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Innkeepers have to open on May 18th. Apply and have your hygiene concept checked individually by the responsible district or the independent city
  • When opening from 22.05. however, only needs to be communicated
  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • A maximum of five people who do not live in one household may sit at the same table
  • Minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the tables in the guest room
  • Minimum distance of 2 meters between the tables outside
  • no reservation obligation
  • Guests must be placed
  • Mask requirement for employees
  • Maintaining attendance lists in which guests enter their full name, address and contact details (must be deleted after the retention period has expired)

How do the restaurants in Schleswig-Holstein open?

In Schleswig-Holstein the gastronomy opens  from May 18th. again under the following conditions:

  • Compliance with the general distance and hygiene rules
  • Submission of hygiene concepts
  • Opening hours limited until 10 p.m.
  • A minimum distance of 1.5 meters must be guaranteed

How do the restaurants in Thuringia open?

In Thuringia, the gastronomy may  from 15.05. reopen under the following conditions:

  • Compliance with the distance and hygiene rules
  • Control and limitation of access
  • enhanced cleaning and disinfection regime
  • Avoid queues
  • Minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the tables
  • The municipalities make their own regulations for serving alcoholic beverages
