(ANSA) - NEW YORK, MAY 13 - Bigamy is no longer a crime in Utah. In fact, a law signed by the governor Gary Herbert entered into force which decriminalizes the practice of joining another person in marriage when one of the two is already legally married. For decades in Utah, bigamy has been punishable by up to five years in prison.
Polygamy is a custom common to several religious groups, including the Mormons whose branch the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has millions of faithful.
Those who oppose the law argue that polygamy is a violation of human rights, particularly with countless cases of abuse of women.
