Nowadays, games are geared towards online multiplayer. A couch-co-op mode is rarely available. An overview of some co-op title recommendations.

  • Finding a matching co-op game is not that easy.
  • Top games often do not have a fun mode that two people can play on one console.
  • You can find some tips for games that have a good co-op mode in this overview.

Whether "Fortnite *", "Call of Duty", "Grand Theft Auto *" or "FIFA": The multiplayer modes of video games can now almost only be played online. But what to do when the best buddies are visiting and you would prefer to play a game together on the same console? The selection may not be that big, but there are some titles that have an entertaining co-op mode  . We have some recommendations in the following sections.

A Way Out - The pure co-op game (PS4, Xbox One)

" A Way Out " is actually a pure co-op game . That means it has to be played in pairs. A single player mode is completely missing. In "A Way Out" the two players take on the roles of prisoners Vincent Moretti and Leo Caruso. Together they plan to break out of prison.

To do this, the players have to work together - tasks can only be solved together. Often, the action takes place asynchronously, so Vincent and Leo are in completely different areas. The game is played on a split screen , which adapts depending on what is happening in the story. The fact that the game focuses clearly on the co-op mode opens up completely new gameplay possibilities . However, the different passages are not exactly challenging.

"A Way Out" is an exciting and cinematic gaming experience that is not about high scores, but about the story you experience with a buddy. The further the game progresses, the more speed the story takes - with a number of unexpected turns.

Gang Beasts - Party knocking with modeling clay (PS4, Xbox One)

" Gang Beasts " offers less story, more action . There is no action here. Because "Gang Beasts" is all about one thing: to clap with friends in the arena. Two to eight players compete against each other and try to knock out the opponents and throw them out of the ring with the funny and colorful figures . The controls are extremely vague, but this is by design.

"Gang Beasts" offers different levels and  game modes , including a soccer and a wave mode. Visually, this title may look a bit absurd, but with several players this somewhat unusual party game is a lot of fun.

Borderlands 3 - classic loot and level (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)

If you want to satisfy your collective drive, the colorful first-person shooter "Borderlands 3 *" is definitely an option. In the split screen, two players in co-op mode hunt for massive weapons and other objects that can be found in the colorful game world. Crowds of opponents stand in their way, who of course also carry all interesting equipment with them.

There are four characters to choose from, each with  unique abilities . By defeating opponents and completing main and side missions, players gain experience points. From time to time the character rises in level and you can improve your skills. "Borderlands 3" is interesting for those who can't get enough of looting and leveling.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - classic co-op from Nintendo (Nintendo Switch)

An Italian plumber who wants to free the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom from the clutches of a dragon: this absurd-sounding story has become the norm for gamers. It is actually even more absurd when these figures sit in go-karts and race against each other and throw themselves into turtle shells and bananas. But "Mario Kart *" has been part of Nintendo's standard repertoire for almost 30 years.

"Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" is the last and most extensive offshoot of the series that has been released for Nintendo Switch *. On a total of 48 routes and eight battle mode arenas , you can compete with up to three friends on a console in go-karting. There are also 42 different characters to choose from as drivers, including, of course, Mario, Luigi, Bowser or Peach. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" can be a lot of fun if you don't mind the colorful look and the sometimes confusing gameplay - but that's just as much a part of a Super Mario game as the dungarees of Mario.

Portal 2 - solve puzzles and think outside the box (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360)

+

" Portal 2 " is a puzzle game in which players have to overcome passages using the " Portal Gun ". This weapon can be used to create two portals that are connected to one another. In co-op mode, two people have to overcome several rooms with obstacles and watch out for traps. A total of four portals can be created and the combination options are doubled. A funny story is also offered.

However, you shouldn't expect a party game at "Portal 2". The game is therefore more interesting for those who like to solve puzzles  that can sometimes be very complex . But the moment is all the more beautiful when the challenge has been mastered.

Cuphead - heavy-weight side-scroller with Mickey Mouse look (Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)

+

"Cuphead" shines above all through the comic look, but the gameplay is very challenging.

The cute cartoon graphics are a bit deceptive, because " Cuphead " is a tough and challenging game . In pairs in co-op mode it becomes even more difficult to master the levels. The players slip into the roles of Cuphead and Mugman and have to survive the passages by running, jumping and swinging. They can also fire shots from their fingers and thus defend themselves against the opponents. At the end of each level there is a demanding  boss fight . It may take a few tries before the final boss is defeated and the frustration increases accordingly.

"Cuphead" is definitely an eye-catcher - especially for cartoon fans in the style of Mickey Mouse . But newcomers will bite their teeth on this title. Even gaming veterans can expect a big challenge.
