Buried 12 meters under the sidewalks of the Capital, the new Alma transformer is ready to supply electricity to more than 110,000 Parisian homes. Installed by Enedis (100% subsidiary of EDF responsible for the management and development of 95% of the electricity distribution network in France), this metal giant of 100 t and 5 meters high replaces its predecessor after 44 years of service.
For Enedis, the objective is twofold: to make the power supply in the center of Paris more reliable and to anticipate demand in the area in view of the 2024 Olympic Games. With an investment of 5 million euros, the new transformer will save 700 MWh per year, equivalent to a reduction in emissions of 55 tonnes of CO2.
The "Alma" Source Station in which the machine rests, is a completely buried building invisible from the outside, 7 floors and 20 meters below street level. This post provides energy in no less than 4 districts of Paris. After the installation of the transformer, the modernization works will continue until the end of 2020 / beginning of 2021.
