In Caen, far from dark cinemas, he continues to bring cinema to life

Gautier Labrusse, director of the cinema Le Lux, is organizing a drive-in until June 6. A new coup for those who invent new things

Getting cinema out of the room is an obsession with Gautier Labrusse, director of Lux, in Caen (Calvados). From cars on the Deauville-Cabourg line to the aquatic center of his city, this enthusiast pushes him out of his comfort zone.

Five years ago, he offered the Caennais the “cinema pool”. “One of my best memories is the screening of 'Gravity', he recalls. We were on fries, in water at 32 degrees, we were swimming in the middle of space. At 50, “ten less than the Lux”, Gautier Labrusse continues to take his reels on a ride.

But he first practiced home cinema, already in Lux. A law student, he has frequented the Salle Caennaise and his team of volunteers since 1988. Six years later, he joined Didier Anne, then director, at the head of the establishment. “We had a lot of themed nights there. Until 7 am, we distributed coffees and croissants, recalls the latter. Sometimes it went all over the place. It was tiring, even difficult to contain, but still rich and full of envy. "

In twenty years, cinema has grown with the duo: "We have gone from one to three theaters and from 50,000 spectators per year to 180,000," says Gautier Labrusse.

To "maintain the link"

The latter's projects are not always unanimous. The Federation of Cinemas strongly criticized the drive-ins, the reopening of theaters being a priority in his eyes at the time of deconfinement. Even Didier Anne is not always convinced by his friend's ideas: "I am more traditional and linked to the room. I'm afraid that people will come out of it when they leave it. And wrongly, because that is also why we talk about Lux. "

Last glimpse: the drive-in therefore, in the parking lot of the Parc des Expositions. Despite the price of the ticket - 20 euros per car - the initiative should not compensate for the closure of the rooms. "Even if we own the equipment, it is a white operation: we will neither gain nor lose money," insists Gautier Labrusse. Unless we are full every day. "

And it's not an impossible mission: the drive-in brings back memories for some. “It speaks to my imagination, rejoices Ludovic Bernard, director. I think it's great that Gautier Labrusse is bringing this up to date. I would have come if I was less than 100 km away! His film, "Ten Days Without a Mom" with Franck Dubosc, was screened on Saturday.

With these outdoor sessions, Gautier Labrusse hopes to inspire spectators to return to the halls when they reopen, starting on June 22. “You have to maintain a link. Spectators will remember that we tried to do things for them, it will help to revive the activity, "he predicts.

The proof: the first session was sold out and the owner's speech was greeted by the horns of 150 cars.
