- Italians are among the major consumers of mineral waters. An ISMEA analysis points out that Italy "is a world champion in the consumption of bottled mineral waters, most of which made of plastic, in third place after Mexico and Thailand".
The report of the Institute of Services for the Agricultural Food Market shows that "in the last ten years, total sales by volume of mineral water bottled in plastic have more than doubled, going from around 5 billion bottles in 2009 to around 10 billion bottles of 2019 ".
"The increases in sales - the analysts explain - have particularly affected the South and Sicily (+ 2.7%), in a context of generalized increase (+ 0.9% the national figure)".
The study shows "that the most important share of consumption relates to natural water which represented 71% of sales volumes equal to approximately 7 billion and 200 thousand bottles purchased in 2019, a value that almost tripled in just 3 years" . The effervescent waters, however, in 2019 were chosen by 13% of Italian families, for a total of about one billion bottles, compared to about 500 thousand in 2016. The carbonated ones in 2019 were bought by 11% of consumers, for a sales volume of approximately one billion bottles.
The slightly carbonated, on the other hand, met the preferences of 5% of Italian families (around 500 thousand bottles, double those consumed in 2016). Finally, it should be noted that the glass bottles of natural water purchased by consumers in 2019 amounted to around 24 million, while ten years ago they were around 31 million (ANSA).
