Pesto, pasta and parmesan - that's all you need for a quick meal. Öko-Test has now examined finished pesto and found many pollutants.

  • Pesto turns pasta into a quick, tasty dish.
  • Öko-Test took a close look at 20  pesto verde  - with disappointing results.
  • Brand products from Barilla and Bertolli were tested, but also cheap own brands, for example from Aldi and organic products.

Pesto is made quickly and actually tastes good to everyone. In order to save even more time, they at least make the pesto themselves, but grab the finished product from the glass or mug. The results of  Öko-Test show that this is not a particularly good idea .

The magazine examined 20 different products and tested them for harmful substances, but also evaluated their taste. The results could quickly spoil your appetite.

Öko-Test checks pesto: Almost all products are contaminated with mineral oil

A simple pesto verde , i.e. green pesto, does not need many ingredients: basil, pine nuts, garlic, olive oil * and parmesan or another Italian hard cheese only have to be pureed and the delicious seasoning paste for the pasta * is ready.

In the ready-made pestos that Öko-Test checked, however, there were completely different "ingredients". Mineral oil , for example, was  found in  all pestos .

According to the Öko-Test, the mineral oil may get into the pesto during the production process. Lubricating oils on the systems are a potential source of contamination here. Öko-Test warns of the presence of mineral oil because it is suspected of being carcinogenic .

Pesto from Bertolli and Barilla: Well-known brands fail the eco test

Now consumers could suspect that they are more protected from harmful substances with more expensive pesto varieties than with cheaper discounter goods and therefore dig deeper into their pockets as a precaution. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The testers were able to detect mineral oil in different concentrations in all pestos, from discounters and branded goods to organic products.

The values were particularly high for the  Barilla Pesto alla Genovese and the  Bertolli Pesto Verde . These popular brands failed the Öko-Test and were rated "insufficient" . Hna.de * also reports on the various pesto brands that were examined by Öko-Test.

Eco test: Not only mineral oil in the pesto, but also pesticides

As if the mineral oil residues were not already reason enough for concerned consumers, the testers were also  able to detect pesticides in 15 of the tested pestos. Here the own brands of  Aldi , Edeka, K-Classic and Rewe performed poorly, but the products of Bertolli and Barilla were again among the "black sheep".

Even organic pesto does poorly in eco-testing

Unfortunately, even buyers of organic pesto cannot imagine that they are safe. The testers got four organic brands under the microscope and again the results were disappointing. Fortunately, no pesticides were detected, but the picture was the same for mineral oil as for conventional products. The pesto verde from Alnatura was so heavily contaminated with mineral oil and plasticizers (MOSH, MOAH) that it even failed with the grade " insufficient ". According to the Öko-Test, the plasticizers come from the PVC lids, which many manufacturers, however, now do without.

At least in  terms of taste , the testers could not find any defects in the tested pestos. There were no bad tastes and the basil was clearly tasted during the rehearsals.
