If a fruit tree drops many of its small fruits in June, it is not necessarily related to a pest. And the late consequences of frost damage are not the trigger either.

If a fruit tree drops many of its small fruits in June, it is not necessarily related to a pest. And the late consequences of frost damage are not the trigger either.

Veitshöchheim (dpa / tmn) - If the fruit tree in the garden now loses many of its small fruit sets, the hobby gardener need not worry. It is a natural process.

Because if the fruit trees bear too much fruit, they cannot supply them all sufficiently until ripening and harvesting. This is why it is selected, in this case it is called the June crop.

Also thin out by hand

But: If the conditions are good, there are still too many small apples and pears on the tree, explains the Bavarian Garden Academy. Therefore, in professional operation, the trees are additionally thinned out by hand to improve the quality of the harvest.

The hobby gardener can also do this, at least in the case of small forms such as spindle or bush trees, espalier and pillar apples, according to the garden experts. They advise you to leave only the largest or a harmless fruit in bunches of fruit with several hazelnut-sized young fruits and remove the rest with a small pair of sharp scissors. The fruit should not be broken out by hand because the whole tuft can break off.

Frost victims form too many unnecessary shoots

If fruit deposits on the fruit tree have already been damaged by the late frosts at the end of April and in May and they now bear comparatively little fruit, amateur gardeners have to watch out for an excessive number of new shoots.

Because the fruit trees, including shrubs with currants and gooseberries, react to the big loss with a strong new shoot. If there are too many branches underneath, especially those that grow inwards or steeply, these should be torn out, the expert advice is. This relieves the trees, as they now put their strength not in the remaining fruit sets but in the new shoots. However, these are not important for the tree.
