Coronavirus: from Brazil to the United States, sources of concern around the world

2020-06-10T15:02:46.835Z

Even if it seems to be in clear decline in Europe, the Covid-19 pandemic is progressing in other parts of the world, notably in South America.

The Covid-19 epidemic is shrinking in Europe, a continent that has been badly affected, but is progressing in other regions of the world, and especially in South America. The World Health Organization (WHO) even ruled on Monday June 8 that the pandemic was "getting worse". "Over 100,000 new cases have been identified in nine of the past ten days, and even 136,000 on Sunday, the highest toll so far," said its chief executive Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, while the 400,000 threshold dead in the world was crossed on Sunday.

“Most people around the world are still susceptible to infection. We are six months since the start of the pandemic, this is not yet the time to ease off, ”insisted the head of the WHO. In Europe, if the situation is clearly improving in France, Italy, Spain and Germany, the British case is problematic. While the United Kingdom is already in second place among the countries with the most deaths, with 40,542 deaths registered by the government, the reality could be worse, if the figures provided by the National Bureau of Statistics, more 50,000 deaths across the Channel are confirmed.

The resumption of trade promotes the circulation of the virus

Barely out of containment, the United Kingdom has decided to put in place a quarantine for all those arriving from abroad - even for residents - a measure which is very difficult to pass. But it is not the only dark spot. Donald Trump's America, where containment has been very uneven, faces a situation that remains worrying with 112,648 deaths, the darkest record in the world faced with this pandemic.

But it is in South America, in Brazil, that the situation is most worrying. The 35,000 reported deaths, which already make it the third most affected country, are also believed to be far below reality. “We can assume that this progression towards South America is explained by the resumption of trade and commerce with Europe, after having been at a standstill for several months. This promotes the circulation of the virus, ”says an epidemiologist. China, where it all started, has a fairly low toll of 4,634 deaths, but also fears that the virus will leave on its soil, through imported cases this time.
