(ANSA) - ROME, JUNE 09 - Seeds of resistance, Seeds of Resistance, a beautiful aerial shot on environmental activists fighting for the territories of the Amazon, made by Pablo Albarenga (Uruguay) won the title of Photographer of the Year and its award $ 25,000 in cash at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards2020 announced today by the World Photography Organization. The names of the first, second and third classified in the ten Professional categories and the winners of the Open, Student and Youth competitions have also been revealed.
Seeds of Resistance is a corpus of works that combines shots of landscapes and territories put at risk by mining and agricultural trade and portraits of activists who struggle to protect them. In 2017, at least 207 leaders and environmentalists were killed in an attempt to protect their communities from projects that threatened their territories.
Albarenga's work (presented in the section FotografiaCreativa) explores the link between activists and the earth, conceived as the sacred area in which their ancestors rest ten hundred generations. With aerial shots, the protagonists of the shots are portrayed from above as if they were donating lavita for their territory.
"This important prize is a double victory for me: firstly, it is an opportunity to tell the stories of traditional Amazonian communities and to put at the center those who are fighting for the future not only of their community, but of everyone. We must look at the beyond the trees, the oxygen and the species "still to be discovered" that live in the rainforest. Secondly, the title of Photographer of the Year can thus land in Latin America, a continent usually told by the eyes of foreigners.
I hope - commented l The artist - that many other photographers in the region will continue to offer their contribution to consolidate the formidable community of Latin American storytellers. The president of the Professional contest, Mike Trow, commented: "His extraordinary series of images is a powerful visual testimony of how deforestation goes hand in hand. with the destruction of communities and peoples ".
