Recall of Bimbosan baby food: special risk for premature babies and immunocompromised infants

Infection by Cronobacter spp. (formerly Entrobacter sakazakii) can lead to sepsis (blood poisoning) in addition to meningitis, explains the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety. Children under the age of six months are particularly at risk . The risk is even higher for premature babies and infants who have been previously damaged by diseases and immunologically weakened .

"Since the germ is ubiquitous and contamination of baby food cannot always be completely ruled out, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that baby food is always freshly prepared and given to the baby immediately after it has cooled to drinking temperature, " the State Office website continued .

Recall of baby food: opinion of the manufacturer Bimbosan

Bimbosan explains in a statement: "Cronobacter sakazakii is a specific bacterium that in very small babies (up to 2 months) and premature babies can pose a health risk in very rare cases ."

Therefore, the bacterium is specifically not allowed in the beginning milk . For products that are aimed at older children, the principle previously applied that this bacterium did not pose a safety risk, according to the baby food manufacturer. “Only Cronobacter should not be found in infant milk (up to 6 months) . There is no food safety criterion for Cronobacter spp in follow-on foods (from 6 months) and in complementary foods, ”writes the Swiss producer himself.

The affected products are food that should be suitable for infants from four ("Bio-Hosana") and five months  ("Bio-2"). The presence of the bacterium therefore does not meet Swiss health standards , which justifies the warning from the Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs.

Recall of Bimbosan baby food: Swiss product also relevant for German customers

The recall * of the Swiss product is also relevant for German customers , as the baby food is available online and may also have been bought by people living in the border area .
