A new study in Hadassah shatters one of the prevalent myths about childbirth, after finding that giving epidurals at each opening does not prolong birth and does not increase the incidence of complications. The results were true for both first and second births.

Every birth room in Israel has a slightly different procedure, but many women who ask for an epidural have come to the answer that it is too early and that they have to wait, or that they are at an early opening and already "too late."

In a study conducted by Hadassah Medical Center among 18,870 women who gave birth in 2015-2003, it was found that the duration of delivery did not vary significantly between women who chose to receive epidural surgery at the beginning of the birth, to those who received it at mid-term or at the end. The researchers looked at each of the maternities when she received the epidural (according to the cervical opening) and how long the delivery took. Complications such as device birth (vacuum) were also examined.

Duration of birth was not affected by the stage of birth where epidural was given, and no significant differences were found. However, the epidural was found to be slightly longer.

In the first births, the duration of the contractions and pressures lasted up to an hour in the various openings, compared to women who did not receive epidural wheezing. In repeat births, the pivotal phase lasted up to three quarters of an hour, and the pressure phase lasted about 8 minutes longer.

" Good news for every woman "

Another study found that epidural birth was associated with more instrumental (vacuum) births, but was not accompanied by a high rate of complications for the mother or fetus. The researchers concluded that "epidural compilation may be offered early in labor".

"The beauty of this study is that it shows that women should not suffer, and that an epidural can be obtained at any stage," says Professor Simcha Yagel, director of the Hadassah Women's and Maternity Division. "We have unequivocally demonstrated that birth length is the same at every stage of receiving epidural. Our gospel for maternity: Take epidural whenever you want."

Principal Investigator, Michal Lifshitz: "At the end of the study, we realized that it was good news for all women. If you decide to get an epidural you should not 'carry' hinges, take an epidural as soon as you need it."
