Household insurance is useful. If you are looking for a contract, you have to look closely. Because with the right tariff you can save a lot of money.
Berlin (dpa / tmn) - If you are looking for household insurance, you should compare the prices well. Because the premium differences can be enormous, as a test by Stiftung Warentest shows. For the magazine "Finanztest" (issue 7/2020), the experts scrutinized 157 tariffs from 61 providers. One result: expensive contracts cost twice and three times as much as cheap ones.
The tariffs for a model case of a 100 square meter apartment were compared. Household contents were insured in the tariffs for damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion or implosion, burglary theft, storm and hail, tap water and overvoltage. Simple bike theft was also included.
The prices for two locations were compared: Munich with a low risk of burglary and thus also cheaper tariffs - and Frankfurt am Main with a higher risk of burglary and thus also higher premiums. In Munich the cheapest offer including protection against natural hazards was 68 euros per year, in Frankfurt 108 euros per year. Expensive tariffs cost almost three times as much.
Those who have had their contract for a long time should also check the conditions. For example, bicycles: bicycles are also insured in many policies. However, some older contracts can still include a so-called night clause. Protection does not apply if the bike is stolen between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and was not in use at that time.
It is also important that the insurance contract contains a clause to waive the defense of gross negligence. Because in these cases the insurance pays - except for intent - in any case.
