Giuseppe Penone, generous as a Medici for Paris and Philadelphia

DECRYPTION - At 73, the Italian artist who speaks to the trees donates nearly 350 drawings to the Center Pompidou and as many works to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A great gift in these times of announced shortage.

Many of my works came to me in Paris, and first took the form of a sketch or a text. The proximity to the capital has, in many ways, contributed to the development of my work, ” declared Giuseppe Penone solemnly at the time of this spectacular donation to Beaubourg. The works of this donation will be exhibited there in 2022.

In the 1970s, Penone attended the birth of the Center Pompidou and began a lasting relationship with the museum. In 2004, the Center Pompidou dedicated a retrospective to the artist whose work embraces nature and resculptes trees
