Coronavirus: "Deconfinement is done in a coherent way", says Dr Lelièvre

2020-06-23T19:07:24.131Z

Jean-Daniel Lelièvre, head of the infectious diseases department at the Henri-Mondor hospital in Créteil (Val-de-Marne), returns to the controversy

Thousands of French people gathered and danced on the streets on Sunday, often forgetting to be left behind and barrier gestures against the coronavirus… Should the Fête de la musique be banned? For Jean-Daniel Lelièvre, head of the infectious diseases department at the Henri-Mondor hospital in Créteil (Val-de-Marne), nothing to cry about scandal.

Are we not going a little quickly to work in deconfinement?

JEAN-DANIEL LELIÈVRE. No. Everything seems coherent to me in the timetable followed. It doesn't shock me that people can go back to the movies, play team sports, go see a game. It is normal, it is the life of the company which resumes its course. We could not continue to destroy it for a disease which, after all, is not as deadly as that. Now she is still there; most of the time, it is benign, sometimes it is not, and we will have to learn to live with it. I remind you that if there was confinement, it was because the health system was in danger of being overwhelmed, unable to take care of not only the patients suffering from Covid-19 but also the others.

New clusters have appeared in recent days, especially in Normandy. Isn't it still alarming?

To see new cases reappear, it does not matter in itself if the patients are young, with no history and have not actively spread the virus around them. However, we must remain very vigilant in the case of people at risk, those who potentially can develop very serious forms. Protecting the weakest is the priority, without forgetting to obviously maintain the barrier gestures, because it is absolutely necessary to avoid a second wave.

We haven't finished this virus yet, so?

No. It will continue to circulate. Besides, people are aware. The StopCovid application, which lets you know if you have been in contact with potential carriers of the virus, has been fairly massively downloaded and this is good news. The Covid-19 could have disappeared if the epidemic had remained confined to China, but since this is not the case, we will have to get used to it. Sooner or later, it will eventually reappear, because there are asymptomatic cases. Many questions remain unanswered for the moment. One wonders if certain domestic animals can not serve as reservoirs for viruses? It is still unclear how long you remain immune after being infected. Six months? A year? From now on, it is the screening that must be amplified. We couldn't do it as much as we wanted. We must now put the package.
