(ANSA) - ROME, JUNE 29 - Not only more than 1,200 deaths registered so far: in the Philippines, the coronavirus pandemic will also contribute to raising births next year, which should reach the threshold of two million. This is the forecast contained in a joint study carried out by the Institute of Population of the University of the Philippines (UP) in collaboration with the United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA).
Interviewed by the issuer Teleradyo, the director of the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), Juan Antonio III, explained that 1.7 million babies were born in the country in 2018. But this level is destined to be greatly exceeded due to the lack of contraceptives for the long period of lockdown imposed in the country.
"The UP Population Institute has now made a projection, in collaboration with UNFPA, according to which there will be 214 thousand additional births. So it seems that 1.9 million babies, or almost two million, are expected next year in the Philippines "said Antonio. (HANDLE).
