Reform of the baccalaureate: the tests change their name

2020-07-01T20:30:44.162Z

The bac reform monitoring committee presents its conclusions on Tuesday. It should offer several inflections to the controversial E3C, the

New name for a new life? Hardly born, this funny acronym, E3C, that high school students of 1st discovered in the fall, will already change its name. The idea is on the table of the monitoring committee, which this Tuesday presents its proposals to improve the reform of the baccalaureate, engaged for a year in a concert of gnashing of teeth.

Passed in the background with the closure of high schools due to Covid-19, the construction of the new baccalaureate opened by the Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, has not stopped since March. The project's follow-up committee continued to meet, virtually, to find out how to pass the E3C pill, these "common tests of continuous control", which high school students in general and technological fields must now rub three times in their education. .

These exams, which account for 30% of the final mark, are organized locally from a national common bank of subjects, and according to a complex procedure which hardly satisfies anyone. Advocates of a simpler and cheaper continuous-check tank tax them as useless gas factories. The camp of defenders of the traditional bac sees it as the end of the universal and republican examination, the same one which gives a value to the education of all the young people, including the pupils resulting from credentials without reputation.

A series of boycotts

It was this powerful ideological battle that, in the summer of 2019, launched an unprecedented strike of baccalaureate corrections, under the amazed eyes of public opinion. Then in the fall, boycotts in E3C chains came to disrupt the lives of many high schools. In certain Parisian establishments, subjected to blockades and demonstrations, the first tests still had not been able to be passed when the thunderclap of the confinement stopped in mid-March, the life of the classes.

But from the start of the school year, the reform will resume. With an identical background but new facilities intended to pacify the climate and simplify the landscape for families. Thus, the techno name of E3C could disappear in favor of a much better known formula: "common duties on the table". All this for that?

Instead of looking like mini-bins, these meetings would be closer to the ordinary assessments that students know: they would have them corrected more quickly, without going through a tedious academic harmonization commission, and the boards of directors high schools would vote for its organization, a way of giving voice to the chapter to the high school students and parents who sit there.

Safeguards to guarantee fairness between candidates

However, safeguards would remain in place in order to guarantee equity between the candidates: anonymous copies, corrected by teachers other than those of the student, harmonization of grades at the end of the final year to correct local biases…

Families would also be informed of the entire school calendar as soon as the school year started. The date of the common homework of the whole year of course, that of the final exams of the bac but also those of Parcoursup, the process of post-bac orientation, which over the years has become the true course of passage in education superior.

These inflections, chiselled to gather the assent of trade unions with opposing visions, should be presented and debated this Tuesday afternoon. The Minister of Education should make his arbitrations in the process.
