"This laughter can cost your life": the anger of Yohan's mother, killed by laughing gas

Nadine Grosdidier, mother of Yohan, 19, who died after inhaling nitrous oxide, shares his distress after the inaction of the aut

He was a "serious", "discreet", "without excess" student. Almost two years ago, on May 5, 2018, Yohan, 19, collapsed on the floor of his family home, in Lacroix-sur-Meuse, near Verdun (Meuse), victim of a cardiac arrest after having inhaled laughing gas. With his childhood friends, they had first emptied into a balloon, a dusting aerosol for computer, based on butane and propane. More commonly, young people mainly use "nitrous oxide", contained in cartridges for whipped cream siphons, sold in supermarkets.

Hijacking its culinary drug use, the "proto" provokes, for a few seconds, an irrepressible laughter. Once empty, these silver capsules are left in the streets and in parks. But repeatedly, its use can lead to neurological disorders, even respiratory distress. Laughing for a few euros, this fashion is not new. But in recent days, alerts have multiplied in several cities, especially since the deconfinement. "What are we waiting for to legislate? Indignantly Nadine Grosdidier, Yohan's mother, desperate for the slowness of the authorities.

Hilarious gas has become the third most consumed psychoactive product among students. Does that surprise you?

NADINE GROSDIDIER. Unfortunately no! I receive daily alerts on our Facebook group "Association Yohan", which we created after the death of our son. Whether in Lille, Marseille, Normandy, people tell me that they now see nitrous oxide capsules on sidewalks. It's everywhere. It’s maddening.

What do you feel?

A very great pain. And anger too. The danger is there, the government is doing nothing. The Senate voted to ban minors from this gas last December. And since then, we still await the vote of the National Assembly. I learn that it will probably not take place before next December. So, yes, there was the coronavirus, but there, we must act, and urgently. Since deconfinement, the diversion of these capsules is more and more widespread, and with the summer holidays, it is likely to accelerate. I have the feeling that we are fighting for nothing.

VIDEO. What is nitrous oxide, the teen drug?

What do you say to those who use it?

To you who consume this product, think of your parents, your family. You are not immortal and this gas remains very dangerous. Around our house, there have already been two deaths. My son Yohan died when he had "laughed" with his friends on the terrace of our house. We had just landed in the Balearic Islands, we exchanged a few text messages and an hour later, the phone rang, it was the gendarmes. They asked us if we knew about nitrous oxide. Obviously, we replied that no. In reality, Yohan had been taking it for three months, which we did not know. We had noticed that our son had been coughing for two weeks but he had refused to go to the doctor. During the evening, Yohan had a cardiac arrest after two inhalations. The firefighters tried to revive him for an hour and a half. In the neighboring village, 18 km away, a 15-year-old teenager was found inanimate in a stadium. If this continues, there will be 30 year olds with severe brain damage and other deaths.

What is the status of your son's investigation?

She stopped because we did not file a complaint against her friend who had brought the gas to the party. We couldn't do that. But I am considering filing a complaint against the state if there is a new death. This product is available over the counter everywhere, within everyone's reach, not expensive. Like my son, young people are not aware of its toxicity. Already, we should start by stopping to call it "laughing gas". On the Internet, there are videos everywhere. But that laughter can cost your life. You know, we are a bit dead with Yohan. All we want is no parent to live what we have lived.
