The treatment for Cordero, 41, nominated for a Tony Award, has been widely followed in the United States as he was a recognized figure on the Broadway circuit and had no previous medical problems, according to his family.
This week, his wife detailed in a televised interview that the actor would have needed a double lung transplant to recover from the disease, which caused him to be in a coma and had to have his leg amputated.

According to his testimony, the disease was so strong that doctors came to fear for his life on four previous occasions.
Cordero was born in Canada and came to New York (USA) to work as a stage actor.
In 2014, he was nominated for a Tony Award - the Oscars of the Theater - for his role in "Bullets Over Broadway", for which he also won a Theater World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
"Rock of Ages", "Waitress" and "A Bronx Tale: The Musical" are other of the shows in which he participated. On the small screen, she starred in productions such as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Blue Bloods".
His wife Kloots said they do not know how the disease was spread.
"We learned that because of COVID-19 Nick's lungs are severely damaged. It looked as if he had been a smoker for 50 years," he added.
Cordero was the father of a one-year-old son named Elvis.
"He was everyone's friend, he loved listening, helping and especially talking. He was an incredible actor and musician. I will love you forever," his wife published. EFE
