With the favorable vote of all the members - with the exception of the secular councilor of the Lega Stefano Cavanna - the plenum of the CSM gave the go-ahead for the appointment of Pietro Curzio as First President of the Cassation who takes over from Giovanni Mammone. The outcome of the vote was given by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who abstained as usual, and who expressed appreciation for the appointment and "excellent professional profile" of Curzio and for the activity carried out by Mammone.

The plenum of the CSM was held in the Quirinale Festival Hall. Mammone welcomed the successor's choice with "all his appreciation" because he held "with great significant skill" the positions at the Supreme Court, as president of the 'filter' section, of work and of the United Sections. Mammone recalled the "common" provenance of labor lawyers. The Attorney General of the Supreme Court Giovanni Salvi underlined the full "convergence" of the CSM on Curzio and the importance of this "path". Salvi remembered Curzio as a "passionate magistrate, open to society and his contributions", and he quoted Ecclesiastes who urged 'not to be excessively right nor excessively wise' and that Curzio himself cited as inspiration in his book of 'Almost wise' memories.

The new first president of the Court of Cassation Pietro Curzio "will be able to carry out the demanding task with awareness and foresight, helping to promote that renewal in the autonomous government that is needed by everyone" . The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said it at the CSM plenum. "Congratulations to President Curzio on his appointment as First President," said Mattarella again. "The report and the interventions carried out revealed the excellent professional profile of President Pietro Curzio, the depth and variety of his judicial experiences. With his study he contributed to the doctrinaire debate and offered his contribution to the training activity of the CSM ".

"President Curzio will succeed President Giovanni Mammone in a few days. I would like to thank you very much for your commitment in your long excellent, appreciated magistrate activity. In the years in which he led the Council, he played his role with reasonableness and calmness, proving himself open to dialogue and discussion so as to motivate the magistrates and the administrative staff. His contribution has also been invaluable for the activity of the Board of Governors in which he has acted without any conditioning and with balance. I extend a grateful greeting to President Mammone and best wishes for your future ". So Mattarella thanked the first outgoing President of the Cassation, Giovanni Mammone

"The wise and correct exercise of administrative discretion - said Mattarella - allows you to promptly select, with care and objectivity, the managers of the judicial offices in the various divisions that the judicial order presents. They have an important role in the path of renewal because it is their responsibility to promote effective organizational modules through which they can give substance to the principles of the inexhaustible autonomy and independence of the judiciary ".

By majority, with only the abstention of the councilor of the Lega Stefano Cavanna, Margherita Cassano - president of the Court of Appeal of Florence, 64 years old, in the judiciary since 1980 - was appointed by the CSM as Deputy President of the Cassation. It is the first time that a woman has come so high in the top functions of the Supreme Court and the Italian judiciary. Even the vice president of the plenum David Ermini voted for Cassano who will be the deputy of the first president Pietro Curzio.
